Get Ready for Trail Riding Season in the Okanagan!
With winter fading and longer, warmer days ahead, now is the perfect time to start preparing for trail riding season. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just getting started, a little preparation goes a long way in helping you make the most of your summer adventures—and in building a stronger partnership with your horse before you head out into Myra Canyon, Glenrosa, Joe Rich or the Ellison trails.
1. Focus on Your Horse’s Fitness
How is your horse coming out of winter? Are they carrying a bit of extra weight, or have they been consistently active and ready for increased exercise?
If your horse has had a quieter season, now is the time to gradually build them back up. Start with light work and aim to work toward at least an hour of walking under saddle. This helps improve conditioning, prevent injury, and ease the transition into more demanding rides.
Also consider their overall feeding program—are they getting the nutrition they need to support increased activity? A well-balanced diet is just as important as the exercise itself.
2. Work on Your Own Fitness
Trail riding isn’t just about your horse—your own fitness plays a huge role in your performance and enjoyment.
Focus on your- Flexibility / Core strength / Cardio endurance / Leg strength / Balance
Improving these areas will not only make you a more effective rider, but will also help you develop the physical resilience and mental focus needed for long days on the trail.
3. Don’t Forget to Have Fun
At the end of the day, trail riding is about enjoyment, connection, and exploring the outdoors.
The greater Kelowna area in the Central Okanagan offers an incredible variety of trail systems, apart of Government owned Crown land, that are merely hoof lengths away from some beautiful residential acreages. Whether you’re heading out for a short ride or a full-day adventure, there’s no shortage of stunning landscapes to explore.
So saddle up, take in the views, and enjoy the journey—this is what riding season is all about.
